Network wired and wireless working, but shows as "Limited"

Hi, our company recently upgraded laptops to Win8.1 x64. When connecting to the office LAN either wired or wireless, everything is fine. When connecting to internet at home both wired and wireless are fine. However, when connecting via VPN from home (using Cisco AnyConnect), we get the message "Limited Connectivity" - but everything is still working. ie we can access internet and internal network resources. This is both wired and wireless at home.

Although this "Limited" message is not causing any problems it is confusing for uses. Has anyone experienced this before, and any idea how to rectify it? I don't want to disable notifications in case there is in fact Limited access at some point. I'm thinking this is something within Cisco AnyConnect but I do not know. Is it maybe to do with the default gateway or that it needs to be added anywhere?

Thanks in advance.

You can try this:Control panel, Network Connections and then

  • Right-click <var><VPN Name></var>, and then click Properties.
  • In the <var><VPN Name></var> Properties dialog box, select the Networking tab.
  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP IPv4), and then click Properties.
  • In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP4) Properties dialog box, click Advanced....
  • Click to unselect the Use default gateway on remote network check box.

Hi,

This issue occurs because the remote access interface is not published in the Wi-Fi interface stack. Additionally, restrictions are applied when a method in the Windows Connection Manager (WCM) API aggregates connectivity. A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described, details as below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2797356/en-us

Yes I saw this on the Microsoft site, but I don't have the option. "Use default gateway on remote network" is not there. I assume because I am using Cisco AnyConnect instead of Windows VPN?

Hi, but it also happens on Ethernet. I installed the hotfix nonetheless, but the issue is still the same

Hi,

Try to find the Ethernet and right click on it then disable it, then enable it again to check whether it will be ok, if this still happens, as you said, this might be because the Cisco AnyConnect VPN not a Windows VPN, I suggest to turn to Cisco for details about this.

Thanks Wade, I just tried, but once the VPN is reconnected, it goes back to Limited Connection.
As it is happening fer several hundred users I think it must be something on our corporate network blocking some sort of check that is done with maybe Microsoft, but thanks for your suggestion. I will try to find out more internally and let yo know if we figure it out.

The Network Location Awareness is hard coded to look for the B Root hint server:

b.root-servers.net 192.228.79.201, 2001:500:84::b

Make certain the IP Address of the B Root Hint Server is included in the ACL which defines the split tunnel list used by your VPN client. This will in turn add specific static routing entries to direct communication established to the IP Addresses or IP Address Ranges to the local Internet Access, utilized by the user.
